This guide has been prepared to support internal staff in the recruitment process of International Medical Graduates (‘IMGs’), who are to be contracted or employed as Medical Practitioners by the organisation.
International Medical Graduates are persons who have completed medical training outside of Australia and are pursuing training and employment opportunities through the Australian healthcare system.
IMGs applying for medical practitioner positions are often at different stages of the medical registration process for Australia, and may require varying levels of guidance as to the steps involved in the process.
Recruiting IMGs represents a longer term investment of resources by the organisation to increase a medical practice’s resource of medical practitioners. The general time frame is 12-18 months.
The recruitment of an International Medical Graduate involves a number of stakeholder organisations, each generating various requirements throughout the process. These organisations include, but may not be limited to:
Australian Federal Government legislation
State & Territory Government legislation
Australian Medical Board (AMB)
Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
Australian Medical Council (AMC)
Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP)
Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACCRM)
Your Hobart Health and related business entities
Medical Insurance Companies
Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG)
Specialist Colleges
The requested documentation mirrors the documentation that the candidate will need to provide to the Australian Medical Council and also to AHPRA to facilitate medical registration in Australia. It is important that the employer engages in and is able to demonstrate due diligence in its own process.
The recruitment process requires candidates to:
validate their identity
validate their qualifications
provide education, training and employment history
provide contact details of referees
EPIC identity validation report
Copy of a valid passport
Police/Criminal Record Check
Training & Education Certificates
Training & Education academic scores
EPIC Training and Education Certificates validation report
MCQ Test report
AMC Certificate (when available)
PESCI result (as required/when available)
AHPRA Registration Certificate (when available)
General letter of Introduction

English Language Skills Test Result

Professional References
To advance medical registration applications with AHPRA, IMGs who pass recruiting and are offered a training and supervision position will require a training plan. Training plans must be devised through consultation between the candidate's Primary Supervisor (and co-supervisor if possible), and the candidate themselves.
An interview offers a good opportunity to discuss and formulate a training plan with the candidate if they are deemed suitable. Alternatively a follow-up time should be arranged to create a plan.
Please Note:
Candidates bear the cost of applying for validation reports through ECMG’s EPIC platform. Candidates need to pay for the validation of documents for processes undertaken by the Australian Medical Council. Candidates will need to nominate Honestally as an additional recipient of EPIC validation reports. At time of writing the cost to the candidate is USD $50 per report to have these made available to Honestally.
